Design is…Grace

Design is...Grace

I was talking to Emily last night, and she got me started on Grace Kelly. Forgive me, I just don’t know much about her, other than she died before her time. One thing about Grace Kelly is, she has the stark, obvious appearance of poise. Although she’s a blonde Italian, Emily shows me that same poise.

It was rather the impetus I needed to get me something for this. It’s an unintentional, unintended, unforeseen, kitschy, yet slyly cool either art contest or tournament…or something else. In fact, it’s growing so fast that it garnered it’s own Flickr group, and people are adding pictures to the pool pretty frequently.

I didn’t, because, as we all know, I’m pretty much a talentless hack. But, if there is one think I do know how to do, it’s creating a tag on del.icio.us that nobody uses. It’s the mad linking skills, coming to bear. And, you’re seeing a quick meme take off, in the span of a day.

To wonder, you know, what it’s like to start a movement. There’ll be a kid in some high school, putting some tribute to this in the art contest, and he and a judge will instantly connect. Folks will do searches for photos tagged with “designis.” A small, and growing, group of people will be able to say, “I created something.”

UPDATE: This “small” group is now well into the hundreds, and it’s already branching off into the puritan “must have ‘Design is’ or it’s not a real wallpaper” group, and the hippie-lib “all we need are pretty boxes and reflections and whatnot” group.

I think that’s really what design is, creating something that a group of people find interesting, and it spurs them to create and share with the group, and create ways to use the technology at hand to get more people involved in the project.

I just don’t know how to condense that in a 40 by 600 pixel box.

My attempts at this so far (I’ll get the courage to post these to the group, someday):
